Virtual reality has come a long way in the past 10 years. We used to be limited to chatting behind our keyboards, but now we’ve moved into online gaming realms where we can display an alternate persona, appear forever young, interact, and even virtually date others. While it may seem like innocent fun, for those with a spouse, this could be devastating. Imagine seeing your husband or wife playing a game, even having virtual sex, with an online spouse rather than spend time with you. Would you consider this cheating?
There are a great number of questions that can be asked alongside of this. How many hours does this activity take out of the time the real couple could be together? If it is more than a hobby and becomes a daily ritual for the online addict to hold a relationship on the Internet for more than a few hours a week, this could be very damaging to an existing relationship much like cheating on your spouse in real life can be.
Also, is the spouse not participating in the online relationship aware of the virtual dating? Does it sit well with them, and does the relationship only stay in that community game? In some cases, a spouse may not know what activity is actually happening inside the computer world; however, if they were to find out they might become very upset. Some couples insist that some time away from their spouse can help in the relationship, and seeking outside, non-serious relationships through online gaming is a safe way to do this.
Why else would a spouse turn to the Internet for a fake relationship? Perhaps they feel something is lacking from their real relationship, and this is a way to balance that need. It may give them a way to follow through with sexual fantasies their partner might not be comfortable with. Sometimes, these relationships are necessary to play through the game’s plot, which should be seen as harmless if it stays a mutually unemotional attachment.
It all falls down to what a person’s beliefs tells them. In some instances, this may not be physically cheating, but instead, emotionally cheating your spouse. An online relationship should never go beyond friendly online, and one’s spouse should never be left ignored. Maintaining real relationships with your real spouse is important, and any outside relationship, real or in a game, could be hurting your spouse.

I feel like you do on this subject. There is plenty of good stuff out there to pile on our computers to make it safe but it is hard to stay ahead of the bad stuff. I’ve actually put some keystrokers on my computer that were supposed to protect my family. So your words are appreciated, but the picture is what caught my eye. It was perfect for the post.
