(ISC) ² is a non-profit organization that certifies information security professionals, and are most well-known for their program Certified Information System Security Professional. The organization was developed in the late 1980s due to the recognition that personal PCs were much more susceptible to online breaching than one single mainframe with previously had existed. (ISC) ²’s core values are to guarantee a safe environment for professionals through the cyber world; the organization has only recently extended its association to include their new Safe & Secure program in order to educate children about the dangers of web usage.
Higher Volumes of Online Sexual Predators
The internet has become such a mainstream networking medium lately, that more and more online solicitors have taken to using the naivety of young children in order to satisfy their cravings. Most of the time, children who have not been properly educated about online predators will succumb to the devious methods of these online solicitors. Safe & Secure works to prevent these types of scenarios before they occur, through educating children about the dangers in talking to people they do not know online.
The Increasing Usage of the Internet by Minors
The days of only the “privileged” having computer and internet access are long gone, and it is commonplace to have at least one family computer per household, if not more. This has led to children becoming more adept at maneuvering through computers and the internet. Safe & Secure works to counteract children’s online vulnerability by displaying the types of behaviors and conversations online predators may attempt to have with them, as well as informing them to always be wary when talking to a stranger online.
Cyber-Bullying and Social Networking Sites
Bullying has transgressed onto a new generation with the internet revolution, and has led to “cyber-bullying”, wherein one child can threaten another online, through various mediums. This has made news more recently because of the slew of harassment against children that can occur on social networking sites such as Myspace and Facebook, which can have catastrophic results on kids. The emerging social networking sites have gone hand in hand with the increase in cyber-bullying, as most of the cases have been through these sites. According to Safe & Secure professionals, cyber-bullying has now replaced sexual predators as the top online threat to kids, and it is important to relay this to children in order to combat it.
Identity Theft
While this does not seem like a problem that should be geared toward children, more and more have been giving away information online, and Safe & Secure works to inform kids that they should not reveal any information about themselves without specific parental approval.
With all these new dangers lurking in the internet, it is surprising that a program such as this has not come around more recently. Safe & Secure is important towards guaranteeing the safety of children online, not only to combat against sexual predators, but also to inform them of the many other dangers that can arise by surfing the internet.

I feel like you do on this subject. There is plenty of good stuff out there to pile on our computers to make it safe but it is hard to stay ahead of the bad stuff. I’ve actually put some keystrokers on my computer that were supposed to protect my family. So your words are appreciated, but the picture is what caught my eye. It was perfect for the post.
