Sometimes it’s not enough just to track websites visited by your child, you have to take further action like blocking these websites. You can block specific websites directly in the browser, or you can use specific tools or you can edit your hosts file.
I will take each method in part and I will describe it so you can follow these easy steps if you want to block the websites for your child.
Block websites in Internet Explorer.
- Open Internet Explorer and in the menu bar click on the “Tools” and select “Internet Option”
- In “Internet Options” hit the “Content” tab and in the Content Advisor area click on “Enable” button
- Hit the “Approved Sites” tab
- In the “Allow this website” field type the URL of the website that you would like to block and hit the “Never” button
- You can add as many website as you want and you can also delete a website from the list by hitting the “Remove” button
- To protect your changes you can enable the supervisor password in case someone wants to modify your allow/block websites list. To enable supervisor password after you added the websites in the Content Advisor area hit the “General” tab.
- In User Option area check both boxes and in Supervisor password area hit the “Create password” button.
- Type the password and hit the “OK” button

Block websites in Firefox
For blocking website in Firefox, you have to download an add-on for Firefox, named BlockSite, because is no other way. Just download this add-on (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3145) and install it.
- Open Firefox and in the menu bar click on the “Tools” and select “Add-ons”
- Hit the ”Options” button of BlockSite add-on
- Hit the “Add” button and enter the websites you want to block
- Enable authentication by checking the box, and type a password to protect your settings

Block websites in Opera
- Open Opera and in the menu bar click on the “Tools”, select “Advanced” and “Blocked Content”
- Hit the “Add” button and write the URL of the website you to block

Block websites using parental control software.
There are many free and paid parental control applications that will provide you blocking website feature. More then that, there are applications that can even filter the Internet and block websites based on keywords. You provide a list of keywords and the application will block all websites containing the specific keywords. The best parental control applications are:

Block websites using HOSTS file
- Click the “Start” button and select “Run”
- Type the following text: notepad c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
- In the opened notepad go to the last line of the file, hit the enter key and type the websites you want to block.
- Example 127.0.0.1 localhost
- Extra step: Windows XP/2000 only
Go to Start > Run > type “services.msc” then hit Enter
Navigate to “DNS Client”, right-click it, select “Properties”, under “Start-up Type”, select “Manual”. Click “Apply”. Then below that, click the “Stop” button. You should do this before you save a large list of servers to your HOSTS file.
