There is nothing new in the fact that the society is becoming more and more dependent on computer and high technology. This wouldn’t be a bad thing at all if this would be for information, but lately, people are becoming dependent on computer for fun and entertainment too. And, unfortunately, children are included in this category too. Children do not play as older generations used to play. Today’s children spend a lot of time in front of their computer (because parents give them their own computers from a very early age) and in front of TV. Online games and video games took the place of old games. This is why you, as a parent, should be careful when choosing to purchase video games for your kids.

Sometimes, especially when kids are young, having them play a video game can be a welcome break both for you and for them. But as they grow up their video gaming habits change. And this is something normal. They might prefer now to play with friends, participate in more challenging competitions and at higher levels. By the way, did you know that the average age of a gamer today is 33 years old? So, not only children play video games; people of all ages are playing games. Think that just like movies and TV shows, some games are simply not intended for young players. This is another reason to keep an eye on the games your kids are playing.

Here are a few things that you must consider when choosing your children’s video game:

  • Know the Rating; here you can find more about the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), the nonprofit organization that assigns the ratings.
  • Stand Your Ground; don’t hesitate to say „no” when the kids want to play a game that doesn’t seem appropriate for them.
  • Set parental controls to block any other games beside the ones you accept as appropriate and set a limit for playing time. Playing too much makes kids addicted.
  • Go deeper and get informed with the games they play. Check online resources, screenshots of the games during play and check other parents’ reviews.
  • Get involved; talk to your kids about the games they play and even join them.

Raising a child is a huge responsibility and the effects video games have over your kids must be seriously taken into account. As a quick end note I would like to quote a child psychologist who says that “children are much more apt to follow their parent’s rules and advice when it comes to video games if they show them that they are interested and have some knowledge about this”. So get involved in your children life and start playing. You are never too old for playing :) .
