Children will give up on playing outside and will choose wasting time on Internet. They are going to do this anyway so better find some nice activities that will at least shape their talent and extend their interest area. If you choose right activities, then your children will gains in intelligence, nonverbal skills, structural knowledge and long-term memory. After all, spending more time on computer is not such a bad habit.
For example if your child loves drawing then find specific tools for him and learn him how to use it. There are many free applications of this type with tutorials and demos for everyone. You can also search for tutorials that explain how your child can draw a house, or an animal. I am very sure your child will be enthusiast of this opportunity.
If your child is passionate by music, then you can provide him online resources for composing music and playing with musical performance.
If he likes to build buildings and cities then you can get a 3D design application that will give him the opportunity to explore this world and to create his imaginary home. It doesn’t matter if is not a game and if it is a serious application. Your child will be even more involved in this activity because he will take it very seriously.
As long as you have enough imagination and patience to search specific applications and resources proper to your child’s interest then the results will be soon visible. And both you and your child will be excited.

I feel like you do on this subject. There is plenty of good stuff out there to pile on our computers to make it safe but it is hard to stay ahead of the bad stuff.
